That is not fully true... that was the general change in OO 2.3 - no more
complex tables anymore when splitting or merging cells. Only complex tables
created from OOo 2.2.1 or prior will remain their complex "cell addressing"
style. See issue 4032.
However, a checkbox to control this -as proposed by you- could be a helpful and
make this much more intuitive.
MRU->AMA/FL: In my eyes, this should be added to the spec and implemented for OO
3.0. By this, we wood keep both behaviors in an intuitive handling and ease live
quite a lot.
