Unable to confirm using OOo 1.9.84 on Win 2000 SP4
1. Open new Writer document
2. Clicked Tools->Auto Correct
3. On the Replace tab, right clicked in the With field, chose Special Character
4. Selected a special character, hit OK.
5. The character appeared in the field as expected.
