Note: I looked at the example "maitre <-> maître". 
Depending on the use of the cornflakes accent (OK, circumflex :-), the proposals
for a misspelled word (i.e. "maitrer") follow the users "choice" by NOT
proposing "the other way":
  maitrer -> maitre
  maîtrer -> maître
