So at least now we have no situation where our guard variable is of less
visibility than that which it is guarding, which was *definitely* a problem. But
we have situations where it is of greater visibility, I'd prefer it they always
matched, but I'm not sure if that matters or not.
Lets see if I can get some sort of response from our visibility guy
