I could only reproduce this with stale ~/.ure Java settings (e.g., running
soffice on a machine with only JRE 1.5 while ~/.ure still contained settings for
JRE 1.6 from some other machine), and the problems disappeared when I removed
~/.ure.
I re-worked the Java settings stuff to be the same as with traditional OOo again
(i.e., per--Brand-layer Java settings now, instead of shared settings across all
office installations, see
