Thanks for staying on the case of this issue.
Since I last communicated, I thought perhaps that the Dmath add-in might have
been the culprit. So I used the extension manager to eliminate that. But my
character formatting problem persisted.
However, your suggestion the eliminate the Openoffice.org2 folder *does* seem to
have done the trick. I now can successfully format characters to my heart's
content. I think you can place this into the resolved category. However, the
cause of the corruption remains a mystery.

support team.
