Ideas for a solution how to do this without the VCL dependency appreciated, even my first attempt needed access to Application::Yield(). I can avoid the call there, and use g_timeout_add_full() for the synchronization [with the (possible) problems described by mmeeks], but then the initialization visibly blocks (IIRC), because gnome-vfs really needs a considerable time [but hopefully that should not be that a big problem].
