I'm not convinced of using the regex engine though (besides that I wouldn't call it "perfectly good", which for sure it isn't), that would add performance penalty impacting at least the current Excel import. Regarding the list of special characters: that may even differ between different localized Excel versions or with different language support being enabled. I wouldn't count on that.
