Nomachine.com provides desktop virtualization software which allows a remote
linux desktop to be efficiently controlled from a PC. The PC client is freely
available. When using the nomachine remote desktop client, it is handy to use
another utility which allows ALT-TAB on the PC to switch among applications
running on the remote linux desktop. This utility, NXUtility.exe, is available
from http://ssrini.netfirms.com/.

When NXUtility.exe is running in the system tray, ALT-TAB continues to switch
between applications on the PC as it normally does. However, when the
NoMachine.com NX client has the focus, then the ALT-TAB operations are routed
over to the linux desktop and cycle among those applications instead. This all
works fine.

HOWEVER, when OO writer has the focus on the local PC desktop and NXUtility.exe
is running in the system tray, ALT-TAB no longer switches away from writer.
Instead, a TAB character is entered into the document. Notice that writer
operates differently than all other windows applications in relation to
compatible operation when NXUtility.exe is in the system tray. With other
windows applications, ALT-TAB continues to allow switching among applications.
But whenever one happens to 'land' on writer (switch focus to it) with
NXUtility.exe running, then it is no longer possible to switch focus away using
ALT-TAB.

So this is mainly a efficiency frustration affecting a very small number of
users who happen to utilize OO Writer on the local PC desktop while also using
NX client (from NoMachine.com) to interact with a remote linux desktop. I
typically do this using virtual desktops (such as
http://virtuawin.sourceforge.net/) -- leaving one desktop running the local PC
applications and another with the NX client (where ALT-TAB cycles among the
linux apps remotely).

The question is why is OO writer affected by NXUtility.exe in a way which
prevents ALT-TAB from working correctly to switch focus away, but other windows
applications are not.

In my test setup, I noticed that OO Calc is *not* adversely affected by
NXUtility.exe in the same way as OO Writer. With OO Calc, ALT-TAB to place
focus or take focus away from the OO application continues to work just fine.
