In case of global documents for instance users might expect to use one field name/value pair identically in all sub documents. Linking sub documents is in principle the same as inserting or pasting another document. The core functions used to do these three operations are in general the same. I can't see a way to determine what the user expects in a certain case. This can be solved by asking the user. A query dialog at pasting/inserting/linking can solve this.
