Importing a .doc file with a Table of Contents with several levels of Headings
in the main document can produce a poorly formatted Table of Contents.
Starting with a good .odt file, exporting it to .doc and then importing the .doc
can induce the problem.
The formating of the TOC entries has to be with indents and spacing so that
1 Chapter 1 .........................#
1.1 section title .................#
1.1.1 third level ............#
would be the intended appearance.
But after importing the .doc file it looks like this:
1Chapter 1 ............................#
1.1section title ......................#
1.1.1third level ......................#
With the Edit Index Table tool one will see that the Entries sequence is
changed from
E# T E T # in the correct .odt
to
E# E T # T in the incorrect imported .doc
The last T also is assigned the page column width as distance. This causes
further problems until it is deleted.
Also the Paragraph Formats of the Headings within the document are changed. The
tab distance (of text from the cestion number) is set 0.00cm in the imported
.doc
Whether the problem lies in the exporting to the .doc format or whether it is
the import conversion from .doc to .odt, I do not know for sure. However .doc
files produced by other people and imported usually suffer this sort of format
mess. So I think that it is a problem of the importation of the .doc file into
Writer.
This problem has been a pain for me since I started using OpenOffice /
StarOffice with SuSe Linux 7.2.
