>From the Ubuntu bug report:

OpenOffice.org doesn't use the FreeDesktop directories spec

On Linux, OpenOffice.org uses the $HOME/.openoffice.org2 folder, which doesn't
match FreeDesktop.org recommendations. You should use the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME
environment variable ($HOME/.config) For all your config/preferences files. This
folder should be removable without any data loss. Then, all the user data like
dictionary, extensions, templates,... should be in $XDG_DATA_HOME
($HOME/.local/share). And, if any, your cache should be in $XDG_CACHE_HOME
($HOME/.cache).

Note it appears that Gnome is in the early stages of converting over to this
(compiz, gtk, totem, and tracker are already converted and probably others) and
it has been a standard for about 5 years. It appears that Mozilla (including
Firefox) will be converting over to this eventually they have preliminary
patches for it as well.
