Illustrative patch attached, but patch unset as its just raw and rough.

But basically it'd be fairly near to track the current state of the options for
antialiasing etc from (under gnome)
system->preferences->personal->appearance->fonts->rendering

We'll use the settings as of startup time, but changes don't get noticed. The
demo patch should work fine for cairo text rendering, though the font cache size
is forced to 0 while dropping font references to ensure its cleared out.
