Of course you could use a date in a formula but the current implementation expects the float format for dates. And for me it's quiet natural, that a 2004-04-22 in a formula delivers the result 1982. And the value 1982 delivers interpreted as date is the 1905, June 4th. So you are able to use dates in formulas but you have to use the right format (float). The question is, if other formats like 2004-04-22 can be used as well?
