I think it was originally created using MS Word '97, and it certainly opens okay using MS Office Word 2003. When I choose File->Open, the status bar at the bottom of the screen says "Importing document..." but there is no progress shown and after about 15 seconds the application crashes out. I am running Writer v2.4.0 on a copy of Windows XP at SP3.
