2008 -------
I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu Feisty, KDE 3.5.6 and Firefox 2.0.0.14.

I downloaded, unpacked and installed the OOo Debs. There seemed to be nothing
new in my path or on my K menu, so I hunted around for a bit and eventually ran
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice from a bash prompt. I happened to be on
virtual desktop 2. OOo asked me for my name and initials, which I provided. It
then asked me whether I wanted to register now, later, or not at all. I
selected `register now' and clicked the button -- `OK' or `Next' (sorry, I
forget its label).

A new tab opened in my existing Firefox session on desktop 1. I registered. I
then went back to desktop 2. I saw the dark blue OOo splash screen, but no
usable Gui. The splash screen didn't respond to mouse-clicks or keypresses.
Further attempts to run OOo from bash produced no visible results.

I used `ps aux' and `kill' to kill all copies of OOo. I ran
/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice once more. Once again, I was asked for my
name and initials, which I provided. This time, I said I didn't want to
register. I was then presented with the new OOo welcome screen (which, IMHO, is
a big usability improvement over 2.4). Subsequent attempts to run OOo have all
worked smoothly -- I've been taken straight to the welcome screen, with no
requests to type in any information or register.
