I think I now understood your problem. Activating one of the format (bold,
italic, underline) button does not start a certain text input mode. It will
apply the character format mentioned on the button to the current cursor
position or selection. When cursor is placed in a different position, the
buttons will show the formatting of the current cursor position. This is
state-of-the-art in word processors.
