I had a file saved on one computer and have found that modifying it using a network path both with a Windows & Linux (Ubuntu) client causes the same problem. On Windows, the file has a path similar to \\server\sharename\folder\file.ods On Linux/Ubuntu, the path looks like smb://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sharename/folder/file.ods I have a password-protected file which now will not accept the password. I also found this problem with a non-password protected file and OpenOffice was able to successfully repair it. All machines involved are using OpenOffice.org 2.4.0.
