The comparison with Linux was done by a collegue of mine, who uses the latest version downloaded from the OOo website. I don't see why that version would interpret the cell as a value, where the version under WinXP interprets the content as text. My first presumption was such a misinterpretation, so I made sure the cells were formatted as number by selecting them, and through the menu using Format-Cells, Category "Number". Apparently this does not "force" the contents of the cell to become numerical? Finally another test I did was exporting the file as MS Excel 97/2000/XP file, then opening it in MS Excel 2003.
