When my wife or I writes a letter in German, using a UK keyboard, we 
have to use oe for ö, ae for ä, etc. For some correspondents, that's 
fine, but fussy old devils will expect to see the proper German 
characters, so I do a Find & Replace. This works fine for all the lower 
case instances, but if the first word of a sentence begins Ae..., it 
gets replaced by ä, rather than by Ä. I would accept this as something I 
shouldn't expect - if WordPerfect hadn't done it right about 10 years ago ! "
