Do you mean when you first open the application? In OpenOffice.org 3.0, you get
a Starting Points
window, asking what you want to do. If your previous session crashed, you get a
file-recovery window
instead.

Applications like TextEdit, Firefox and Terminal open with an empty window
because _they only have
one kind of document_. But OpenOffice.org handles many kinds of documents. If
it always opened a
text document, users who wanted to work in a spreadsheet, presentation,
drawing, database, XML
form etc. would be annoyed.

I suggest you explore OpenOffice.org and find out all the useful things it can
do. Don't just work in
text docs. ;)
