The Entries tab of the Insert Index/Table dialog is very confusing, especially
for the novice user.
- The Structure display is non-standard and non-intuitive. One must read the
online help or other documentation in order to understand how it works.
- Defining a hyperlink by two endpoints that are distinct from the element the
link spans is non-intuitive in a wysiwyg editor and leads to some anomalies and
is a source of considerable user frustration.
- The behavior of disabling and enabling the buttons to add elements to the
structure is confusing. For example:
- Multiple chapter numbers are permitted. Why?
- The All button is in the wrong place and doesn't provide feedback.
It is confusing to define a hyperlink by two endpoints that are distinct from
the element it spans. By selecting either of the two endpoints (LS, LE) or the
included element, one can apply a character style to each of the three
separately. It is not clear what behavior is expected if different character
styles are applied. I got into a situation where I was unable to create a
hyperlinked TOC because of this, and if you do a web search on something like
"no hyperlinks TOC OpenOffice", you will find other users who have had similar
difficulty" A better solution would be to allow selection of one or multiple
elements of an index/table entry (chapter number, entry text, tab stop, page
number) and apply a character format and/or hyperlink to that selection of
elements. I suggest:
- Hyperlink button - applies or removes a hyperlink.
- Edit drop-down box - provides a list of character styles that can be applied.
(I see no reason why users need to modify character styles from this dialog.)
When a tab is selected, tab formatting is available (as with the existing
dialog).
- Chapter no., Entry Text, Tab stop, and Page No. buttons, grouped in a section
labeled "Insert".
The following changes to the Structure display would help:
- Give each element button a full name, e.g. "Entry" "Chapter no.", "tab", "page
number". The tool tips help, but the widget is so unusual, that it's not clear
what to do with it at first.
- Even better, do away with the buttons and use some kind of text elements that
can be selected but not edited.
- Give the display enough width to display all the buttons/text across without
having to use the (non-intuitive) arrows.
Rethink and document the enable/disable specification for the insert buttons.
The All button should be located near (below?) the Level text box and when
clicked, should toggle the selection of all levels vs. just one level.
