I can reproduce this with OOo1.1.3+WinXP_SP2.
But I cannot reproduce this with OOo1.9.87+WinXP_SP2.
With m87 I only get a "General OLE error", no freezing.
That's maybe because OOo does not have signs for "and" and "or" and cannot
convert the formulae to OOoMath - and I don't have Word installed either.
P.S. Have you selected to import/export MathType to/from OOoMath formulae
in the dialog Tools->Options, Section Load/Save->Microsoft Office?
Is the checkbox on or off?
