If I type a word that the spell checker doesn't recognize, like "Grönhårig"
(which means "green haired"), it suggests that I should replace it with "Grön
hårig" (which means green and hairy), probably because it finds both "Grön" and
"hårig" in the swedish dictionary, but not the composition.

This splitting rule is fine when you write in english but not when you write in
swedish since you will more often than not get incorrect suggestions.

It would be great if this splitting behavior was language dependent. There are
probably more languages than swedish that don't generally split words in the
english way.
