atjensen, I see what you mean. I can actually get it to work one way now you've
pointed it out.

The following all use fs's attachment.

Works:
- open the document
- Tools / Relationships ...
- click on ID in the Right table, drag and drop to ID2 in the Left table
- in the dialogue "This relation already exists", select "Create..."
=> relations dialogue appears
    - check that the pre-filled fields are correct (ID2-Left and ID-Right)
    - close the relations dialogue with OK
=> both relationships are shown
- save
- close the Relationships window
- Tools / Relationships ...
=> both relationships are still shown

Doesn't work (1) (fs's example)
- open the document
- Tools / Relationships ...
- Insert / New Relation ...
- in the "Relations" dialog
  - set "Tables involved" to "left" and "right"
  - set "Fields involved" to "ID1"-"ID" and "ID2"-"ID", this way creating one
    relation between left and right, which connects left.ID1 with right.ID and
    left.ID2 with right.ID.
- close the "Relations" dialog with OK
=> the new relation appears in the relation design
- save and close the relation design
- Tools / Relationships
=> the newly created relation is gone

Doesn't work (2)
- open the document
- Tools / Relationships ...

either:
- click on ID in the Right table, drag and drop to ID2 in the Left table
- in the dialogue "This relation already exists", select "Edit..."

or:
- right-click on the line representing the existing relationship
- select "Edit"

then:
=> relations dialogue appears
=> notice that the pre-filled fields show the existing relationship (ID1-Left
and ID-Right)
    - on the line underneath the existing relationship select ID2-Left and
ID-Right
    - close the relations dialogue with OK
=> the new relation appears in the relation design
=> notice that the "Save" icon is still greyed out, as is "Save" in the File
menu
    - close without saving
=> NO prompt "The relationship design has been changed. Do you want to save the
changes?"
=> new relationship is lost

Doesn't work (3) (same as fs's example but first deleting pre-existing
relationship to start with a clean slate)

- open the document
- Tools / Relationships ...
- right-click the existing relationship line
   - select "Delete"
=> no relationships show
- Insert / New Relation
- in the "Relations" dialogue
  - set "Tables involved" to "left" and "right"
  - set "Fields involved" to "ID1"-"ID" and "ID2"-"ID", this way creating one
    relation between left and right, which connects left.ID1 with right.ID and
    left.ID2 with right.ID.
- close the "Relations" dialog with OK
=> the new relation appears in the relation design (two lines join tables)
- save and close the relation design
- Tools / Relationships
=> the newly created relation is gone (no lines join tables: i.e. I had imagined
it was saving the first listed relationship and discarding the second, but when
two brand new relationships are added together in this way, neither is saved)

---

I have a feeling I have mixed up the terminology again wrt
 - one relationship of two parts between two tables
 - two separate relationships between two tables
... but I hope I made myself understood anyway?
