Backwards compatibility can be accomplished by storing the whole formula with
markup, but hiding certain elements from the user. For instance, to use Newton's
second law as an example (please see screenshot from comment#1), the following
formula would be saved in the odf document:
color green{vec F} = color red {m} cdot color blue vec {bold {a}}

However, the UI would hide the colour and bold declarations, and show only this
to the user:
vec F = m cdot vec {a}

The text "vec F" would be in the colour green (because that is what is declared
in the saved code), and the rest of the equation would be similarly coloured.
The Text Formatting toolbar should also appear in the Equation Editor to
facilitate the declaration of markup in the exact same manner that the user does
in the main Writer window.
