This is not exactly a bug. The slide numbers become unreadable when the
previews have a small size and text is scaled accordingly. They are gray
because of text antialiasing. Both is a feature.
We could turn off antialiasing for small text or display text with a minimal
size. But both options would introduce other problems that would be more severe
than that of unreadable slide numbers.
