Yes, I knew about frame spacing, as my initial filing stated.  (Internal spacing
is not at issue in a formula one letter long.)  Try this:
   make body text italic
   set formula frame spacing to zero
   make two lines of text
   line 1 is one letter of plain text: x
   line 2 is a one-letter formula: x
My complaint: the x's are not aligned vertically.  Apparently a formula object
is wider than the bounding box of its content, even with minimum (zero) frame
spacing.
