On Windows Vista x64 and on OpenSUSE 11.0 32 bit a slide show which
uses the random transition setting will cause OpenOffice.org Impress
to crash with many (I tested 96, 128, and 512) slides. Does not fail
on Windows XP Professional on the 4+ tests I ran on 2 different
machines.

Start OpenOffice.org Impress and create a new presentation from the
presentation wizard. Use the following selections in each of the
panels.

1- Type
   = From template
     = Presentations
       = Recommendation of a Strategy
   = "Preview" checked
= "Do not show this wizard again" unchecked

2- Select a slide design
= Presentation Backgrounds - Blue Border
   = Output medium - Original
   = "Preview" checked

3- Select a slide transition
   = Effect - Random Transition
   = Speed - Fast
= Presentation type - Default (has also failed with automatic)
   = "Preview" checked

4- Describe your basic ideas
   = Name - Mark Waite
= Subject - Random transition failure test
= Further ideas - Fails when I duplicate this presentation many times

5- Choose your pages
= Leave all pages checked, including "Title", "Overview", "Long-term
goal", "The Present Situation", "Development up to present",
     "Potential Alternatives", and "Recommendation"
   = "Preview" checked
   = "Create summary" checked

6 - Presentation is created with 8 slides. In the left panel perform
a "Select All" either with Control-A or with "Edit" -> "Select
All", then copy the selected slides and paste them to the end of
the presentation. The presentation will have 16 slides.

7 - Perform the same "select all", "copy", and "paste" 3 more times to
have 128 slides in the presentation.

8 - Navigate to "Slide Transitions" on the right hand panel, and
adjust the "Advance slide" setting to advance "Automatically
after" 1sec, then use the "Apply to All Slides" button to place
that transition on all slides. Save the presentation in case this
    test crashes...

9 - Start the slide show and wait for a failure.

I've seen the failure consistently on my Windows Vista x64 Ultimate at
work. I've tried the same steps on two different Windows XP machines
and it does not fail on either of them.

I've also seen the failure consistently on two different OpenSUSE 11.0
machines using the installation from the OpenSUSE build service
UNSTABLE as of 25 Sep 2008.

Bug 430449 (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=430449) has
been submitted to the OpenSUSE maintainers of OpenOffice in addition
to this bug. Since it happens on two platforms, but not on Windows
XP, it seemed safer to provide a report to both teams.

Windows Vista platform details:

- Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
- Two quad core processors
- 4 GB RAM
- Operating system patches current

Windows XP platform details:

- Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home
- Uniprocessors, one a 2.4 GHz Celeron, the other a 1.6 GHz Celeron
- 1-2 GB RAM on the Windows XP machines
- Operating system patches are current

Linux platform details:

    * system version and architecture, e.g. openSUSE-10.2-x86_64

      $ uname -a
      Linux markw8-1 2.6.25.16-0.1-default #1 SMP 2008-08-21 00:34:25 +0200 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    * desktop, e.g. KDE or GNOME

      GNOME

    * OOo version, e.g. "Build 2.2.0.1". Get it from the last line of the dialog
"Help/About OpenOffice.org".

      OpenOffice.org 3.0.0
      OOO300m7 Build 9354

    * 32-bit OOo is used on x86_64 system

32 bit OOo used on a 32 bit system

    * the package is updated from the Build Service

Package is updated from the build service

The Linux stack trace from gdb shows a segmentation violation, if that helps
