I checked with "Ooo 3.0.0 RC4 Multilingual version German UI WIN XP: [OOO300m9
(Build9358)]" and can NOT confirm the reported effect. I created a completely
NEW 3.0 installation (German Localization) and all spell checking worked fine.

Please contribute more information concerning your installation!
Did you already try to uninstall / install?
Really only WRITER problem?
What Language is selected for the characters in your document? Please attach a
sample document!
