Every time you go Insert-Picture-From file... it goes to to the gallery. Have tried changing paths in Tools-Options-OpenOffice-Paths. Didn't change until I restarted my computer. Keeps going back to that folder (My Documents). This means you have to continually navigate back to the folder or directory that your images are in. This is very, very time consuming if you have a lot of images to insert.
