Well, this is actually a function of the HSQLdb database engine not Base per se.

Also, your description is not completely accurate. The reason for the failure to
convert was not because of 'data' in the field, rather because of the data's
format. For instance using your steps, if in the VARCHAR field you had entered
the string '2002-02-02' the conversion to DATE type would execute without a 
problem.

The HSQLdb engine has specific rules for data transformations such as this, to
the best of my knowledge there is nothing in Base that breaks the rules as they
would apply to any instance of any HSQLdb database.
