Sounds like one of the rare cases where the driver advertizes a max texture size the hardware actually cannot handle. From what I read on the net, this laptop has very little graphics ram (specs go down to 8mb), so this appears plausible. Could you try this http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/CanvasBlacklist , but instead of blacklisting, change the MaxTextureSize entry from 2048 to 1024 or even below.
