instead of shutting down, I use hibernate because it brings up my machine faster
and saves workstation state.  I only shutdown when I have to.

as a result, I sometimes run into bugs in software that isn't expecting that,
such as memory leaks, etc.  

hibernation does a shutdown somewhat. all services seem to be bounced when you
boot back up. all running processes, from what I understand, are restored from
hard disk to memory.  Restoration takes a number of minutes, but it is faster
than straight booting (I have a lot of processes).

on to the subject at hand - after each successive hibernation, an extra OOo
quickstarter appears in the system tray.

expanding and contracting the system tray may reduce the number of quickstarters
by 1 or to 1 (a little more observation to see exactly what happened, I already
forgot which occurred).  I think it reduces by 1.
