The attached file is quite minimal, and it shows the problem quite well: - If I unitalicise the second word first sentence, nothing is spaced out, but inter-word space is increased. - If I italicise the second word first sentence, the second word and the word before are spaced out, the rest remains unspaced with bit inter-word spaces. Checked in two Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.5.5. When trying the other problematic documents on Linux and Windows, the problem did not appear (thus I have not checked this one).
