Please try the following: Check which kind of dialogs you use -> OOo's own once or if running on Gnome the special gtk-filepicker (check within OOo under Tools/Options/OpenOffice/General checkbox -> use OOo own filedialog). The OOo own one should normally work. Try to save in a different file-format. Try to remove the ~lock file before trying to save.
