for as long as issue 4756 remains the subject of discussion/contention and
possible closure, I should
quietly leave this issue 96184 open.
Really, on Mac OS X:
* the alt- key combinations MUST NOT behave in this way
* and (veering back to issue 4756) the user SHOULD NOT be forced to edit
configuration files to achieve
a default that should be set out of the box.
A quiet period of maybe twenty-four hours or more may be helpful.
