Hidden text can be displayed when switching non-printing characters ON.
Please read in the help:
"Hidden
Hides the selected characters. To display the hidden text, ensure that
Non-printing Characters is selected in the View menu. You can also choose Tools
- Options - OpenOffice.org Writer - Formatting Aids and select Hidden text."
It was probably switched OFF in your last session in 2.4.1 and you have switched
ON in 3.0.
