I think, e.g. and i.e. are best handled in OpenOffice.org by autocorrection:
e.g. -> e. g., i.e. -> i. e. (with non-breaking spaces).
Also eg, ie (frequent cases of the informal writing style, see
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/eg) and e.g and i.e typos.
