just confirmed on ubuntu 8.1 with oo 2.4.1 (m17)
are you sure, you did exactly the above mentioned stepps ?
- choose File -> Wizards -> Presentation...
-> do you see the huge number of events in the log window ?
- choose (*) Empty presentation
- click Next >>

for ubuntu just click on a background and it will crash...
