With OOo 3.0 on Windows XP SP3 this symptom changed: after 10 to 30 seconds, the
file opens now. In the 10 to 30 seconds pause before I can still notice this
behavior: grayed-out quick starter right click menu entries, ability to break
the pause immediately by dismissing the context menu a second time, and no
visible activity (cpu, hard disk) up to then.
I conclude that OOo 3.0 as opposed to 2.4.0 and 2.4.1 implements a timeout for
this situation, so it is not that noticeable any more. The underlying problem is
not really fixed, but as it is now it is acceptable and so I close this issue as
WFM.
