------- Additional comments from [email protected] Sun Dec 28 09:55:48 +0000 2008 ------- There seems to be some sort of conflict between OOo 2.3.1 and the Compose Character extension from ProductivityApps. I am new to OpenOffice and not a sophisticated computer programmer, so I can only report what has occurred and ask for help in debugging it. I just installed ProductivityApps' "Compose Character" extension, version 1.2.7. This extension allows the typist to enter foreign and special characters in Writer and Calc components of OOo by creating a macro that replaces a combination of key strokes with the desired ASCII foreign symbol or special character. Until installation of the extension, Writer was behaving normally. After installing Compose Character, the extension itself performed as advertised, substituting the desired foreign or special symbol when I typed the prescribed combination of key strokes and then typed the keyboard shortcut I chose which triggers the character replacement macro. However, when I attempted to type a heading in All Caps by using the Caps Lock key, Writer refused to enter any letters into the test document. Turning off Caps Lock allowed me to enter text. But when I tried to backspace to erase typing errors, nothing happened. Both sets of arrow keys (on the 10-key keypad and on the main keyboard) were also disabled. I could type text in, but could not edit it or move the cursor around within the text document. The Tab key continued to work. I tried disabling Compose Character and Compose Character X in the Extension Manager by highlighting them and clicking on the "Disable" button, and even tried restarting the computer, but the Backspace, arrow, and Caps Lock keys still did not work in Writer. It may or may not be significant that I had to select a keyboard shortcut three times before I found one that the system would accept. I first tried to use the shortcut Alt+/ to trigger the macro and got an error dialog box saying error=noerror. I cancelled that shortcut assignment and assigned the macro to Alt+€ (my computer, an Acer Aspire, has a special Euro key). That triggered a different error dialog box. Unfortunately, I failed to note what that box said. Finally, I again cancelled the assignment and assigned the macro to Alt+9, which worked. My next step is to remove Compose Character altogether, which I hate to do as I often have cause to compose documents and spreadsheets in languages other than English. I would prefer to resolve the conflict, and I don't know where the problem lies or how to fix it. I have notified ProductivityApps of the problem as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
