------- Additional comments from [email protected] Sun Jan 4 15:10:07 +0000 2009 ------- Set the formula syntax under /Tools/Options/Calculate to 'Excel R1C1'. Problem 1 Try to place a minus sign in a formula anywhere other than at the very start, e.g. with a positive integer in each of cells r1c1 and r2c1, put the subtraction formula =r[-2]c-r[-1]c into cell r3c1. It produces a #NAME? error. However, alter the order of the formula to =-r[-1]c+r[-2]c and it produces the right answer. Problem 2 With r1c1 and r2c1 each containing a positive integer, place the cursor in r3c1 and press the summation button. The formula =SUM(a1:a2) is created and pressing return produces a #MAME? error. So the summation button isn't recognising the R1C1 notation. Enter the summation formula manually, select the summed cells with a cursor drag, and you get the correct relative formula, =SUM(R[-2]C:R[-1]C). Whilst some might regard this notation as off the mainstream, it is more readable and far more powerful than the A1 type notation. It makes it very easy, for instance, to create a column of cells each containing the same (copiable) formula summing all of the preceding cells. Trying to do that with A1 notation is possible but ugly, mainly due to the (rather strange) absence of a function which would denote 'the current cell' in a summation. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
