(It removes a major inconvenience associated with merged cells) The idea of deletion across merged cells is potentially hazardous. If that is allowed, there must be controls (confirmation, etc) to ensure no unwanted loss of data. Maybe allow deletion across merged cells if the data in the region being deleted has already been deleted.
