I looked into this a little and found additional requiremtns:
- the control state has to be reported as disabled when drawing the control
(currently not the case just because the application window does not have focus)
- we need to actually redraw the control (which currently does not happen), this
basically means redrawing the whole app window. probably we should do that mac
only.
