Attempted to reproduce in version OOO300m9 in Windows XP SP3

Opened the example file, though it seems to be encoded for version 1.0? (At
least that's what Impress tells me when I try to open it.) I saved it as my
current version odp.

Also tried reproducing in a new presentation to establish independence of the
file from the bug.

I noticed all the shapes had background colors in the example, so I attempted to
reproduce this without the backgrounds.

I also tried varying the way hatching is set, per brucekaskubar's comments,
trying to pin down any inconsistencies between the Area and Hatching Tabs. (For
reference, here are three different paths to changing the hatch pattern:

1. Create one or more shapes, and select one. Go to Format --> Area --> Area Tab
--> Fill Dropdown --> Hatching --> Choose a pattern --> OK
2. Create one or more shapes, and select one. Go to Format --> Area --> Hatching
Tab --> Choose a pattern --> OK
3. Enable the Line and Filling Toolbar from View --> Toolbars. Create a shape
and select it. Choose Hatching from the Line and Fill toolbar and choose a
pattern.

Per wg's question, the objects are selected. I have tried selecting multiple
objects and single objects.
