The reason is that the formulas contained in the document are NOT OOo Math Formulas but Windows, or better MathType, formulas. That is the formulas were NOT created with OOo Math but most likely in MS Word. In order to edit/open them you would need an OLE server for that format running, and that is something that is only available for Windows (by MS) and just maybe for Mac.
