1. AFP connections to one or two volumes on a remote server

2. with neither OpenOffice.org.app nor OOo-dev.app open

3. move to Trash:
~/Library/Application%20Support/OOo-dev/

4. open OOo-Dev_DEV300_m41_MacOSXIntel_install_en-US.dmg

5. use Finder to copy
/Volumes/OOo-dev%203.0/OOo-dev.app
        to
/Applications/

6. have a Dock icon for
/Applications/OOo-dev.app/

7. click the Dock icon for OOo-dev

8. enter name and initials, opt to register

9. whilst I didn't notice it, I assume that JREProperties appeared briefly
in Dock around this time

10. Safari comes to foreground, register successfully

11. bring OOo-dev to foreground, probably using command-tab

— my recollection of the order of points 12—20 below is not 100%.
However: later attempts to reproduce suggest that appearance of
JREProperties is followed by soffice not responding for
        a period that is at best: brief; sometimes: remarkable;
at worst: unreasonable (so long that force quit becomes appropriate).

12. accept invitation to download and install update to extension 'French
"Classic and Reform 1990"
spelling and hyphenation and thesaurus dictionaries…'

13. installation finished without errors, click OK

14. Help menu | Check for Updates…

15. OOo-dev 3.0 is up to date

16. click Close

17. click Text Document.

18. command-W to close window

19. command-N to present start module

20. command-, to present 'Options - OOo-dev - User Data'

21. click Java

22. JREProperties appears briefly in Dock

23. JREProperties disappears from Dock

24. OOo-dev stops responding, does not resume

— menu bar continues to display JREProperties in lieu of OOo-dev

25. other applications may stop responding for some time

— maybe coincidence, around this time my connection to the Internet was
lost

26. OS or Finder presented a dialogue listing three interruptions a single
AFP volume

27. power off then power on my wireless router, leave the room, make dinner

28. OS or Finder presented a dialogue listing one interruption for an AFP
volume

29. OOo-dev responded, found Java 1.5.0_16

[macbookpro03-centrim:/Applications/OOo-dev.app] gjp22% sudo find . -name
"JREProperties*"
