I hae been using "Ooo 3.0.1 (DE) Multilingual version GERMAN UI WIN XP:
[OOO300m15 (Build 9379)]" for months and can NOT confirm such a general "often
fails to start" problem.
Pls. repair (or uninstall / reinstall) your OOo, and if the problem remains,
pls. contribute more information (PC, Processor, graphic card ..., OOo
localization, ...
