If the page styles are different between master and a subdoc at the insertion
point, the subdocs will start on a new page. This is rational.
But, if the styles are the same, automatic page break is a BUG.

I can reproduce this bug by setting different page styles for master and sub
docs.

When inserting subdocuments, if we also want to restart page number, then,
manual page break insertion is the only way (where you can set the option). This
bug will produce a blank page after the manual page break.

Please review this bug, it is not conflicting with new features described by
od's comment by nature.

And I suggest:
1) Either provide a way to manipulate the page numbers (like inserting
subdocuments with page number start from arbitrary number)
2) Or, don't break page when styles are the same for both master and sub
documents, esp. after the manual page break starting the same page style.
